Marissa and I actually grew up in the same town in Ohio and swam together in high school. I was thrilled that we connected again all these years later to collaborate on this! I chuckle thinking about my little freshman self being intimidated by Marissa when she was a senior. She was poised, well-spoken, and obviously just as beautiful as she is now! Intimidation turned to admiration when I realized she is just as sweet and genuine as she is gorgeous. Marissa was one of the few seniors on the team who treated underclassmen like real people!
Marissa was 10 years old when her mom began teaching her how to sew. She started out by making pillows for her dolls, then continued to expand on her knowledge of sewing machine parts in junior high school. By high school, she was making her own purses. These skills came in handy when she was pregnant with her daughter, Livi, and the crafting flame was re-lit. Livi also fueled Marissa’s ambition to start Bee Mine Sunshine.
When Marissa went back to work full-time shortly after Livi was discharged from the NICU, it devastated her. After a few months, she went to part-time to save her sanity and spend more time with her daughter. When Livi was 8 months old, it suddenly hit Marissa that she needed to get back to crafting as an outlet and in late 2014, Bee Mine Sunshine was born. She hoped one day the business would allow her to stay home full-time. Amazingly, within 6 months, that dream became a reality!
Now, here’s where it gets even more interesting! Marissa was part of a “birth month club” on The Bump forum online. She was able to connect with other pregnant women who were due with their babies the same month as her. That’s where she met her now business partner, MaryAnne Converse. When their daughters were around 8 months old, they realized they only lived 40 minutes from each other and decided to have a play date that summer. It became a regular occurrence for them. Marissa learned that MaryAnne was a prior designer and manager for the Pottery Barn and her skills were the missing piece of Bee Mine Sunshine. MaryAnne now does most of the sewing and designing new prints that will come out this year. They make their own fabric designs as much as possible to give their customers some truly unique apparel and accessories. Marissa’s role has shifted to focusing on the marketing side of things, which consists of the blogging and social media, but still sews part-time. Marissa proudly boasts about how fast MaryAnne sews and said, “I’m never letting her leave me!” These mommas have a beautiful relationship, from moms, to friends, and now business partners.
Bee Mine Sunshine has allowed both women to be stay-at-home moms and run the business full-time! Most of their business comes from online orders, but they also do local craft shows and markets. The schedule of places they’ll have a booth set up is posted on the “Our Story” page of their website. The long term goal of the business is to open a storefront in southwest Ohio. Not only would they sell their clothes and accessories, but they also plan to host craft parties and mother/daughter events. Count me in!!
Bee Mine Sunshine may be a small shop, but they have BIG heart! I absolutely love small shops that give back! Marissa started The Care Package Project, which is a nomination based care package gift to families or mothers in difficult situations. There are NICU, mother’s loss, and childhood illness packages. I highly recommend checking out this page on their website. You can donate, share your child’s NICU story, and/or pray for the project. Print out their coloring page for $1, color it, and send it back to be included with the next package going out!
I also love small shops that source their materials from other small businesses. This is directly from their website:
“The small business community is like a family, and our customers are a part of that family. When you support small business, you are not just putting another dime into a big corporation CEO’s pocket. You aren’t on hold with an outsourced customer service line when you have a question. You are not just another order number. You are making a difference. You are allowing shop owners to follow their dreams. You are helping stay-at-home moms feed and clothe their little ones. You are buying from someone who turns around and buys from another small business. You become part of a COMMUNITY. Join the movement. #shopsmall “
Marissa and MaryAnne’s vision and mission as a small business is why I am so passionate about supporting local and small businesses. I want my money to contribute directly to someone’s family, not a head honcho of a large corporation.
