What could be more adorable than the shop name “Bee Mine Sunshine?”
I’ll tell you!
The amazing mommy and me apparel made by the beauties below!
Meet Marissa Beisner and MaryAnne Converse!
MaryAnne Converse (left) and Marissa Beisner (right)
Marissa and I actually grew up in the same town in Ohio and swam together in high school. I was thrilled that we connected again all these years later to collaborate on this! I chuckle thinking about my little freshman self being intimidated by Marissa when she was a senior. She was poised, well-spoken, and obviously just as beautiful as she is now! Intimidation turned to admiration when I realized she is just as sweet and genuine as she is gorgeous. Marissa was one of the few seniors on the team who treated underclassmen like real people!
Marissa was 10 years old when her mom began teaching her how to sew. She started out by making pillows for her dolls, then continued to expand on her knowledge of sewing machine parts in junior high school. By high school, she was making her own purses. These skills came in handy when she was pregnant with her daughter, Livi, and the crafting flame was re-lit. Livi also fueled Marissa’s ambition to start Bee Mine Sunshine.
When Marissa went back to work full-time shortly after Livi was discharged from the NICU, it devastated her. After a few months, she went to part-time to save her sanity and spend more time with her daughter. When Livi was 8 months old, it suddenly hit Marissa that she needed to get back to crafting as an outlet and in late 2014, Bee Mine Sunshine was born. She hoped one day the business would allow her to stay home full-time. Amazingly, within 6 months, that dream became a reality!
Now, here’s where it gets even more interesting! Marissa was part of a “birth month club” on The Bump forum online. She was able to connect with other pregnant women who were due with their babies the same month as her. That’s where she met her now business partner, MaryAnne Converse. When their daughters were around 8 months old, they realized they only lived 40 minutes from each other and decided to have a play date that summer. It became a regular occurrence for them. Marissa learned that MaryAnne was a prior designer and manager for the Pottery Barn and her skills were the missing piece of Bee Mine Sunshine. MaryAnne now does most of the sewing and designing new prints that will come out this year. They make their own fabric designs as much as possible to give their customers some truly unique apparel and accessories. Marissa’s role has shifted to focusing on the marketing side of things, which consists of the blogging and social media, but still sews part-time. Marissa proudly boasts about how fast MaryAnne sews and said, “I’m never letting her leave me!” These mommas have a beautiful relationship, from moms, to friends, and now business partners.
Bee Mine Sunshine has allowed both women to be stay-at-home moms and run the business full-time! Most of their business comes from online orders, but they also do local craft shows and markets. The schedule of places they’ll have a booth set up is posted on the “Our Story” page of their website. The long term goal of the business is to open a storefront in southwest Ohio. Not only would they sell their clothes and accessories, but they also plan to host craft parties and mother/daughter events. Count me in!!
Bee Mine Sunshine may be a small shop, but they have BIG heart! I absolutely love small shops that give back! Marissa started The Care Package Project, which is a nomination based care package gift to families or mothers in difficult situations. There are NICU, mother’s loss, and childhood illness packages. I highly recommend checking out this page on their website. You can donate, share your child’s NICU story, and/or pray for the project. Print out their coloring page for $1, color it, and send it back to be included with the next package going out!
I also love small shops that source their materials from other small businesses. This is directly from their website:
“The small business community is like a family, and our customers are a part of that family. When you support small business, you are not just putting another dime into a big corporation CEO’s pocket. You aren’t on hold with an outsourced customer service line when you have a question. You are not just another order number. You are making a difference. You are allowing shop owners to follow their dreams. You are helping stay-at-home moms feed and clothe their little ones. You are buying from someone who turns around and buys from another small business. You become part of a COMMUNITY. Join the movement. #shopsmall “
Marissa and MaryAnne’s vision and mission as a small business is why I am so passionate about supporting local and small businesses. I want my money to contribute directly to someone’s family, not a head honcho of a large corporation.

Meet Brittany Shinn! The author and owner of The Shinn Life blog and Etsy shop.
The Boss Lady herself, Brittany Shinn
I have to credit this lady and her wonderful blog, The Shinn Life, for giving me the extra push to start The Mermaid Nook. In honor of her success and all the help and advice she has given to me, I wanted thank her by featuring her blog and Etsy shop FIRST!
I met Brittany through her husband, Adam. He and I met back in 2010 during our Air Force job training in Texas. When I found out we’d be stationed together, I jokingly told him we’d be best friends and it actually happened! Lucky for me, when Adam married Brittany I gained another great friend! They have a son, Max, who was born in February of 2015. Naturally, I plan to figure out a way to get Norah, my daughter, and Max to fall in love and make us cute grand babies! The Shinn’s were stationed in Florida with me until 2014. They then relocated to Utah where Adam recently finished out his time as an active duty Air Force member. They just moved back to their home state of Oregon and absolutely love it! If you read my “About Me” then you know I have a hidden agenda when I go visit them! 😉
Let’s get back on topic before I start gushing about how wonderful the Shinn family is. Anyway, Brittany’s blog has it all! She has delicious recipes, honest parental experiences, and my favorite has to be her makeup posts! I wish we lived closer so I could bribe her into making me look like a movie star too! She also blogs about fashion, photography, and home decor. I highly recommend hopping over to her blog and checking it out! She is truly talented behind a camera and has way more fashion sense than I do. If we lived closer, we’d be doing makeovers ALL the time! 😉
I can’t forget about her Etsy shop! Brittany makes STUNNING earrings and necklaces. I already have 5 pairs of earrings and my collection is growing! My absolute favorite are the mermaid/dragon scale ones pictured below:
She also makes the most gorgeous boxes that your order arrives in and they can be personalized for any occasion. I couldn’t bring myself to throw away the boxes that my earrings came in! Her jewelry is perfect for gifts or a little extra sparkle for yourself! They are so versatile that I’ve worn the earrings to a fancy photo shoot and to the gym. You can easily dress them up or down. I also have to mention they won’t irritate your ears. My ears are very sensitive when it comes to earrings, but I don’t have any irritation or itching while wearing them. You will not be disappointed if you snag yourself a pair of earrings and a matching necklace to complete your look!
Brittany is a talented photographer, makeup artist, and jewelry designer. She is also a wonderful mother to Max, so she’ll be the perfect mother-in-law in about 20 years to Norah! 🙂 I couldn’t wait to write this piece about her and The Shinn Life. You can follow and like her on many social media avenues, including Facebook and Instagram. The links to The Shinn Life Facebook, Instagram accounts, Blog, and Etsy shop will be listed below. Just click on the one you want to go to!
Brittany has given me an exclusive discount for my followers – use the coupon code MERMAIDNOOK at checkout for 10% off your order (no minimum)! Her Etsy shop link is listed above! Go grab some beautiful jewelry for your gorgeous self!
